The girl reported the incident to a friend’s relatives who immediately took her to the police. She was later rushed to the local hospital and subsequently shifted to Vani Vilas Hospital in the City. The condition of the girl is said to be critical.
Attibele police have detained two men accused of committing the crime.
The daughter of Beloorappa and Shivamma, and a resident of Abbayanapalya, Shalini (name changed) was a student of a nearby anganawadi.
The girl had been playing with a friend, Kallesh, 4, near the anganawadi, adjacent to the mango orchard. Seeing two men go into the orchard to pick fruits, the two children followed.
Friend sent away
The two men gave Kallesh mangoes and sent him away. They then lured the girl deeper into the orchard with more mangoes.
A while later, Kallesh saw Shalini return, crying and with blood streaming down her leg. He immediately called a relative.
“When I saw her coming limping and crying, I informed my aunt,” he said.
The aunt told a colleague to summon the girl’s mother from her work at a neighbouring garment factory. In the meantime, she took the girl to the local police station.
Police officers rushed the girl to a nearby government hospital from where she was transferred to the Vani Vilas Hospital in the City.
Police sources said the girl had been sodomised and was subjected to a brutal rape by the two men.
Suspects arrested
Police also rushed to the mango orchard and found two men in an inebriated state. Kallesh recognised both as the ones who had given him mangoes.
The detained have been identified as Madhu, 19, a private bus conductor, and Vijay Kumar, 30, a worker at a garment factory.
Madhu had been previously arrested in an assault case.
Police said that Vijay Kumar is married and has an eight-year-old son. Police also told reporters that the duo had confessed to the crime.
Vijay Kumar’s wife who came to the police station, broke down during an interview with Deccan Herald, when told of her husband’s crime.
Parents stunned
Beloorappa and Shivamma, who were yet to meet their daughter after she was transferred to Vani Vilas Hospital, wept while speaking to Deccan Herald.
Shivamma prayed that her daughter would come out of this tragedy.
The family hailing from Hooligere, in Kadur taluk, Chikmagalur, migrated to the City four years ago, in search of work.
Both Beloorappa and Shivamma are employed as factory workers. The couple have another daughter who is eight years old.
