Accused faces 23 murder charges in Eastern Cape’s ‘biggest criminal case’

Serial murder accused Bulelani Mabhayi will face 11 more murder charges, bringing the total to 23 of murder and 10 other counts of attempted murder, rape and housebreaking, says a Saturday Dispatchreport.

The public prosecutor revealed this as Mabhayi was making his third court appearance before Magistrate Nomthandazo Vabazathe in the Butterworth Regional Court since his arrest last month. He is accused of breaking into houses of elderly residents around Tholeni village and raping and murdering or attempting to murder them using a panga. Tholeni has since been dubbed the ‘village of death’. Politicians, teachers’ unions, church leaders and ordinary villagers gathered at the Regional Court for what police and the NPA said was the biggest criminal case in the history of the province. A request to transfer the matter to the High Court for a ruling on whether Mabhayi should be transferred to a psychiatric institution for further tests had already been made to the Director of Public Prosecutions. Mabhayi will probably spend 30 days at the institution. Vabazathe postponed the matter to 18 October.
