Neo-nazi attack ‘won’t affect’ ties with Greece

Turkey’s consul general in Komotini, İlhan Şener, believes a recent attack on him by members of a neo-Nazi Greek party will not ‘break the friendship’ between the two countries

The Turkish consul general to Komotini, İlhan Şener, said the recent attack on him by members of the neo-Nazi Greek party Golden Dawn will not break the friendship between the Turkish and Greek nations.

A group of nearly 30 protestors from Golden Dawn chanted slogans and waved Greek flags against Turkey outside the Kavala Municipality building and attacked Şener’s car while he was in a meeting with Kavala Mayor Kostas Simichis.

When asked about the official reactions to the incident, Şener said he had received good wishes “from Turkish and Greek authorities alike.”

“Such things will not break the friendship between Turkey and Greece. Our meeting with the Kavala Municipality was about this in the first place. We were trying to find ways to have more Turkish citizens come and visit here,” he said.

Şener said he was told by security forces that a crowd had gathered in front of the Kavala Municipality, but he chose to proceed with the meeting nonetheless.

“I told them it was their duty to ensure the security of the meeting,” Şener told the Hürriyet Daily News. “We were in the meeting for about an hour, during which we could hear the chanting outside,” he said, adding that the chanted slogans were mostly about modern Turkey’s founder [Mustafa Kemal] Atatürk.

“We could hear them all through the meeting. Things that I would not want to repeat right now,” Şener said, adding that the accompanying delegation had to stay within the building for over an hour because of the incident.

As Şener was leaving the site, a minor group managed to break through and reached his car.

“Four or five of them approached the car. They hit the windshield and kicked the car,” he said. Later, his group was able to leave the municipality under a police escort.

‘Attackers do not represent Kavala’

Such behavior in no way represents the Greek public, Şener told the Daily News. “These are a few Nazi sympathizers. They do not represent the Kavala Municipality, they do not represent the Greek public,” he said.

The security forces also acted in good faith, despite the incident, he added. While policemen are trained to handle large crowds in Turkey, the Kavala security forces “were not expecting such a crowd … I am certain that [the policemen] all had good intentions,” he added.

“Those who chanted swear words about Atatürk should know that he was the strongest supporter of amicable bilateral relations,” Şener added. “When Atatürk was nominated for a Nobel Peace Price in 1924, Greek leader Eleftherios Venizelos was the one who forwarded his name to the committee.”

Greece has recently seen a surge in neo-Nazi activity, with Golden Dawn winning an unprecedented 18 seats and 7 percent of the vote in the June 2012 parliamentary election.

On streets of Athens, racist attacks increase

Friday, November 16th, 2012

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — The attack came seemingly out of nowhere. As the 28-year-old Bangladeshi man dug around trash bins one recent afternoon for scrap metal, two women and a man set upon him with a knife. He screamed as he fell. Rushed to the hospital, he was treated for a gash to the back of his thigh.

Police are investigating the assault as yet another in a rising wave of extreme-right rage against foreigners as Greece sinks further into economic misery. The details vary, but the cold brutality of each attack is the same: Dark-skinned migrants confronted by thugs, attacked with knives and broken bottles, wooden bats and iron rods.

Rights groups warn of an explosion in racist violence over the past year, with a notable surge since national elections in May and June that saw dramatic gains by the far-right Golden Dawn party. The severity of the attacks has increased too, they say. What started as simple fist beatings has now escalated to assaults with metal bars, bats and knives. Another new element: ferocious dogs used to terrorize the victims.

“Violence is getting wilder and wilder and we still have the same pattern of attacks … committed by groups of people in quite an organized way,” said Kostis Papaioannou, former head of the Greek National Commission for Human Rights.

As Greece’s financial crisis drags on for a third year, living standards for the average Greek have plummeted. A quarter of the labor force is out of work, with more than 50 percent of young people unemployed. An increasing number of Greeks can’t afford basic necessities and healthcare. Robberies and burglaries are never out of the news for long.

With Greece a major entry point for hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants seeking a better life in the European Union, foreigners have become a convenient scapegoat.

Some victims turn up at clinics run by charities, recounting experiences of near lynching. Others are afraid to give doctors the details of what happened — and even more afraid of going to the police. The more seriously hurt end up in hospitals, white bandages around their heads or plaster casts around broken limbs.

Greek Prime Minister Warns of Societal Collapse Like Weimar Germany; Citizens Storm Defense Ministry; Merkel Takes Gamble on Visiting Greece

Saturday, October 6th, 2012

Greece is politically and economically bankrupt. Unemployment is 24.4% and destined to get much worse with the latest round of austerity measures.

Worse yet, Greece is still encumbered by massive layers of bureaucracy that makes it difficult to get anything done.

Yesterday, in a massive breach of security, Greek citizens stormed the defense ministry. This has German chancellor Angela Merkel willing to take a chance on a trip to Greece next week.

Today, Antonis Samaras, the Greek Prime Minister warns of societal disintegration without urgent financial aid.

Antonis Samaras says Greece’s democracy is in danger, comparing situation to Germany’s pre-war Weimar Republic

Greece is teetering on the edge of collapse with its society at risk of disintegrating unless the country’s near-empty public coffers are shored up with urgent financial aid, the country’s prime minister has warned.

Almost three years after the eruption of Europe’s debt drama in Athens, the economic crisis engulfing the nation has become so severe that democracy itself is now imperiled, Antonis Samaras said.

Resorting to highly unusual language for a man who weighs his words carefully, the 61-year-old politician evoked the rise of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party to highlight the threat that Greece faces, explaining that society “is threatened by growing unemployment, as happened to Germany at the end of the Weimar Republic”.

Mounting anti-austerity rage before a new round of sweeping EU-IMF-mandated austerity measures appears to have caught the government off-guard, with officials voicing fears over the ability of Samaras’s fragile coalition to survive.

The unprecedented storming of Greece’s defence ministry by hundreds of protesting dockworkers on Thursday – a breach of security not seen in modern times – has especially unnerved officials. On Friday, Samaras lashed out at “those who don’t understand the meaning of law and order”.

“The government is waging a battle on all fronts for the nation’s credibility and its future so that the sacrifices made by Greeks aren’t lost,” he said, referring to the spending cuts and tax increases that have sparked record levels of poverty and unemployment. “I will not allow the country to become a free-for-all.”

In the interview Samaras emphasised that Greek cash reserves would run dry by the end of November. “The key is liquidity,” said the leader. “That is why the next credit tranche is so important for us.”

The high-wire act of placating international lenders while keeping social unrest at bay will be tested as never before when Merkel, the German chancellor, flies into Athens next Tuesday. With anti-EU sentiment at an all-time high, opposition parties and trade unions vowed a baptism of fire.

“She should expect demonstrations. Greek society will welcome her with mass protests,” said Panos Skourletis, a spokesman for the radical left main opposition Syriza party.

The Independent Greeks party, also vehemently anti-bailout, has said it will make war reparations a major part of its own protest when it stages a “symbolic blockade” outside the German embassy in Athens during Merkel’s visit.

The warning by Samaras coupled with the storming of the defense ministry is not a sign of a pending societal collapse, but rather a sign the collapse is well underway.

There is no reason to believe a visit from chancellor Merkel will stem the tide.

Greece’s Golden Dawn Opens Office in New York City

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Greece’s ultra-nationalist party Golden Dawn (Chrysi Avgi) has inaugurated a new office in New York City, to reach out to the Greek diaspora. A branch of the political party is already operational in Melbourne, Australia.

According to Ekathimerini two polls this weekend have placed Golden Dawn as the third political party in Greece, with nine percent of the vote. Their rise in popularity, which Digital Journal reported as standing at 22 percent, means that the ultra-nationalist party has now overtaken PASOK in public opinion.

Golden Dawn is now reaching out to the Greek diaspora, opening a branch of the political party in New York City. The party’s New York website says:

The Golden Dawn is the only political party in Greece that unapologetically stands for the sovereignty, security, and dignity of the Greek people. The party intends to reverse decades of unlimited third world immigration which has brought crime, unemployment, disease and possibly terrorism to the once peaceful Greek cities.

We stand with the Greek people who have been driven to poverty and despair by the imposition of the genocidal IMF and European Union austerity policies that are decimating the population and turning Greece into a slave state.

Our goals are to promote and support the Golden Dawn’s nationalist ideals and vision for Greece among the Greek diaspora. We must resist and overcome the genocidal multi- culturalist, and anti-Hellenic agenda of the New World Order.

Thus far the party has collected medicines, food and clothing from the diaspora in the U.S. to send to Greece.

Two men detained after immigration officers raid Indian restaurant

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

Border Agency officers investigated Echt Tandoori in the Main Street of Echt, Aberdeenshire, on Thursday night.

The men are currently in detention and could be removed from the country.

Echt Tandoori faces a fine of up to £20,000 if it is found that the men were working illegally.

Employers are required by the Home Office to check that staff are allowed to work in the country.

Adam Scarcliffe, assistant director of the UK Border Agency in Scotland, said: “Offenders should know that there is no hiding place and that where we find people who are in the UK illegally they will be arrested and removed.

“We are targeting employers who take on illegal workers and who encourage illegal immigration in the process.

“We’re happy to work with businesses to let them know what checks need to be made on staff, but those who choose to break the law should know that they will face heavy fines.”

22,000 illegal migrants held in Dubai

Sunday, August 26th, 2012

More than 22,000 people, mostly Asians, tried to sneak into Dubai last year in search of jobs but were captured by authorities within an intensified drive to stem illegal immigration, according to a senior police officer.

The number is higher than that in 2010 but is far below the record 45,549 infiltrators captured in the Gulf’s business hub in 2009, said Brigadier Khalil Al Mansoori, head of the criminal investigation department.

His figures showed a total 32,186 people, mainly from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and other Asian countries, were arrested in the emirate in 2011. They included 22,173 illegal migrants and 4,762 expatriates who absconded from their original sponsors.

“We have intensified a campaign to curb illegal immigration and those who violate migration laws in the country….more than 90 per cent of the offenders arrested last year were Asians,” he told the Arabic language daily Alittihad.

He said the Department had drawn up a strategy to combat infiltration, adding that it includes more police and coast guard patrols, radars and the creation of a special unit named “the counter-infiltration department.”

“Many of those captured trying to enter the country illegally had been seized before and deported…we are coordinating with all concerned authorities to combat this phenomenon given its serious consequences on the society as many illegal migrants are involved in theft and other crimes,” he said.

Mansoori repeated a warning to employers, landlords and others against hiring or giving home to illegal entrants and absconders, stressing that they must check the status of expatriates before helping them.

“We also appeal for the public to report any absconder or illegal migrant because this will help us fight crime and other negative aspects in the society.”

Dutch immigration minister under fire

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Leers talked tough when he took office as Minister of Immigration under the previous minority cabinet. All asylum-seekers whose requests were rejected would be deported as quickly as possible. But it appears now that the minister may have fiddled with the statistics.

An investigation by Dutch current affairs programme Nieuwsuur claims that most of those described as being deported are not refugees. The official number of “forcible deportations” also includes people stopped at the border such as those carrying drugs or without a visa.

“The largest number of so-called deportations,” said migration specialist Han Entzinger, “is in fact of people who have never actually entered the Netherlands.”

Massaging the numbers”
Leers did not take part in the programme but said via a spokesperson that the department’s figures were always collated in this fashion. However, politicians from a number of opposition parties said they were not aware of this and were critical of the minister.

“Leers is massaging the numbers to create the impression he’s deporting as many people as possible,” said Labour Party MP Martijn van Dam.

Detention “inhumane”
The minister is also under fire from other quarters. The Council of Europe, the continent’s advisory body for human rights, has just issued a report highly critical of the treatment of unsuccessful asylum-seekers in the Netherlands.

The Council says the conditions in detention centres are sometimes in conflict with international agreements such as the European Treaty for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment. This comes hard on the heels of a report by the Dutch Ombudsman describing conditions in detention centres for illegal aliens as “inhumane”.

Unlawful treatment
Around 6,000 people are currently in Dutch detention centres awaiting deportation. This total includes a large proportion of refugees whose asylum requests have been rejected. It is not always possible for these people to return to their countries of origin so they can sometimes be kept in detention for a maximum period of 18 months. It is also not uncommon for those who have been released from detention to be re-arrested and detained once more. The Council of Europe describes these practices as unlawful, saying illegal aliens may only be forcibly detained if there is a realistic prospect of deportation.

The Council is also critical of the treatment of detainees, saying it is worse than that of convicted criminals and of the Dutch practice of detaining families with children.

Last resort
The criticisms echo those of Ombudsman Alex Brenninkmeier who said earlier this week that change was urgently needed in detention centres.  He said detainees should have more freedom of movement, better access to medical care and the opportunity to work or study.

Leers again reacted via a spokesperson, saying detention has always been a last resort and it was up to aliens themselves to avoid it. He said that those willing to co-operate when it comes to their departure will not be forcibly detained.

The criticism from the Council of Europe is particularly unwelcome for the Netherlands which aims to set an example for other countries when it comes to human rights. Dutch governments regularly condemn human rights abuses in countries such as Russia and Turkey which are also members of the Council.

The tweet that ousted a Greek Olympian: youthful mistake or slur?

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

A controversial tweet by Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou and her ensuing expulsion from the London Olympics has set off a firestorm in her home country.

On Sunday, Ms. Papachristou tweeted that “With so many Africans in Greece, at least the mosquitoes from the West Nile will be having homemade food.”

Her tweet became widely known on Greek social media today, and the Greek Olympic Committee decided she was out, saying that her tweet was “contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement.”

To some, it was evidence of racism by an athlete who has shown sympathy in the past by the ultranationalist Golden Dawn party, which many perceive as neo-Nazi for its anti-immigrant rhetoric and the Nazi salutes its followers perform in public. Her actions, which include posting YouTube videos of Golden Dawn and retweeting posts by Golden Dawn members, have made many argue that the mosquito tweet wasn’t just a bad joke.

“No matter how old you are, when you offend the Olympic values, you can’t be a member of the Olympic team,” said head of the Greek Olympic team, Isidoros Kouvelos, in a television interview with Greece’s Skai TV.

But others argued that Papachristou’s youth should have been taken into consideration.

“She’s just a kid that made a mistake,” said Papachristou’s coach, Giorgos Pomaski, “I respect the Olympic Committee’s decision. I just want people to know that Voula doesn’t know what racism is. Believe me, I know what racism is, because I’m from Bulgaria.”

After her tweet spread, Papachristou followed up with an apology: “I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitteraccount,” she wrote. “I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach on human rights.”

The publicity the incident got has triggered many reactions on social media.

In protest of Papachristou’s tweet, many have posted the photo of the civil rights salute African-American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos performed atop the medal podium at the 1968 Summer Olympics.

But a Facebook group grew to more than 6,000 members in just two hours to support Papachristou: “In Greece, it’s better to for athletes to dope than to have a sense of humor,” the post read. “We feel sorry for this tragic decision of the Greek Olympic Committee.”

Golden Dawn Asks Why Turkish Warship did not Fly Greek Flag

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

Greece‘s neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party presented its first Parliamentary question, asking why a Turkish warship did not fly the Greek flag during a visit to the port of Piraeus.

Golden Dawn deputies Nikolaus Kuzilos and Yiannis Lagos presented the question to Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos, Yorgo Kırbaki of daily Hürriyet reported today.

The deputies asked why the Turkish frigate “Gediz” did not fly the Greek flag when it made a port call at Piraeus during a NATO visit on July 10. “Two warships – one French and one German – which were part of the NATO force, both flew the Greek flag when they docked at Piraeus. The Turkish frigate did not follow suit,” the question presented by Golden Dawn stated.

Golden Dawn claimed that the incident was covered up to prevent a diplomatic confrontation with Turkey and asked what the Greek Foreign Ministry had done to counter the “provocation” by the Turkish warship. The party also asked “what plans the Greek foreign ministry had prepared to prevent a similar incident from taking place again.”

Hürriyet has learned that Greece and Turkey share the practice of not flying each others’ flags when their warships visit a port belonging to the other country.

Croatia rescues 65 immigrants at sea

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

Croatia’s coast guard on Monday rescued about 65 illegal immigrants after their ship heading to Italy broke down in the Adriatic sea, local authorities said.

A handout photo provided by Croatia’s Defense Ministry shows a ship carrying 65 illegal immigrants near the southern Croatian island of Mljet after it broke down in the Adriatic sea as it was heading to Italy. The boat, a motorised sail vessel, was towed into the port of Dubrovnik by a Croatian coast guard ship.

The boat, a motorised sail vessel, was towed into the port of Dubrovnik by a local coast guard ship, private Nova TV channel reported.

Local authorities have set up tents near the port to enable medical teams examine the immigrants before sending them to an old warehouse which has been turned into a makeshift shelter, it said.

The defence ministry said it distributed food and medicine to the Somalian, Egyptian, Syrian and Afghani immigrants on the boat bound for Italy from Greece after it was spotted in international waters south of the Croatian island of Mljet.

The Adriatic is often used by illegal immigrants attempting to reach Western Europe’s coastal states.
