(Born 1914) A courier for the Polish underground who in November 1942 brought information to London reporting the deportation and mass murder of Jews. He met with Allied leaders and delivered a message from Jewish underground sources demanding help and action.
Interestinly, one of the first acts by the Bolsheviks was to make so-called “anti-Semitism” a capital crime. This is confirmed by Stalin himself: “National and racial chauvinism is a vestige of the misanthropic customs characteristic of the period of cannibalism. Anti-Semitism, as an extreme form of racial chauvinism, is the most dangerous vestige of cannibalism…under USSR law active anti-Semites are liable to the death penalty.” (Stalin, Collected Works, vol. 13, p. 30).
After a solemn walk through Washington’s haunting Holocaust Memorial Museum, President Barack Obama on Monday unveiled new sanctions targeting Iran and Syria and extended American aid in the hunt for Joseph Kony, the Lord’s Resistance Army warlord.
Obama, with Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel at his side, toured the museum and wordlessly lit a memorial candle in the cavernous Hall of Remembrance for the millions killed by Nazi Germany.
“I say this as a president, and I say it as a father: We must tell our children about a crime unique in human history,” Obama said afterward during a speech in the museum’s packed auditorium.
“We must tell our children,” Obama said. “But more than that, we must teach them. Because remembrance without resolve is a hollow gesture. Awareness without action changes nothing. In this sense, ‘never again’ is a challenge to us all—to pause and to look within.”
Obama announced sanctions on individuals who help Iran and Syria use 21st-century technology—like cellphone tracking or Internet monitoring—to abet the crackdown on dissent in those countries. The sanctions include freezing individuals’ assets in the United States and banning people from American soil. The White House did not provide a list of those affected by the move.
“These technologies should be in place to empower citizens, not to repress them,” Obama said, warning Syrian President Bashar al-Assad‘s supporters that they were “making a losing bet.” Obama, who sent a small number of special operations forces to central Africa last year as advisers in the hunt for Kony, announced an extension of that mission “to bring this madman to justice, and to save lives.”
“It is part of our regional strategy to end the scourge that is the LRA, and help realize a future where no African child is stolen from their family and no girl is raped and no boy is turned into a child soldier,” he said.
Obama, whom Republicans accuse of shortchanging Israeli security, also vowed he “will always be there” for the Jewish state.
“When faced with a regime that threatens global security and denies the Holocaust and threatens to destroy Israel, the United States will do everything in our power to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon,” he stressed.
Wiesel, who introduced Obama, wondered openly in his remarks whether world leaders had learned from the inaction that made the Holocaust possible:
If so, how is it that Assad is still in power? How is it that the Holocaust’s No. 1 denier, (Iranian President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad, is still a president, he who threatens to use nuclear weapons—to use nuclear weapons—to destroy the Jewish state? Have we not learned? We must. We must know that when evil has power, it is almost too late.
In a direct message to Obama, Wiesel declared, “I hope you understand, in this place, why Israel is so important.”
He said: “Israel cannot not remember. And because it remembers, it must be strong—just to defend its own survival and its own destiny.”
Obama said he would award the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, to Jan Karski, a Polish Catholic who was among the first to sound the alarm about the Holocaust.
And he announced that the governmental Atrocities Prevention Board he created last August would hold its first meeting to discuss steps to prevent mass killings.
“This is not an afterthought. This is not a sideline in our foreign policy,” Obama said.
The president also announced he would commission the first-ever National Intelligence Estimate on mass killings—compiling the assessments of the American intelligence community on the risks of and possible responses to genocide.
“We need to be doing everything we can to prevent and respond to these kinds of atrocities—because national sovereignty is never a license to slaughter your people,” he said.
After his speech, Obama shook hands with Holocaust survivors in the first two rows of the audience.
John McCain, a frequent and vocal critic of Obama’s foreign policy, welcomed the president’s announcements but said more must be done to help Syria’s opposition survive the government’s deadly crackdown.
“The only way to stop the killing, force Assad to leave power, and create the conditions for a negotiated political transition for Syria is to change the military balance of power on the ground, including giving the Syrian people the means to defend themselves,” McCain, a Republican senator from Arizona, said in a statement.
An examination of the three main areas of the German economy, agriculture and forestry, industry and the trades, and trade and commerce, shows clearly what the Jew had in mind.
Agriculture and forestry, which require hard labor for limited pay and a hard life, were not for him. Only 1.7% of the Jewish population worked in this branch of the German economy. There are no reliable statistics available, but one can assume this small element working in agriculture and forestry was not to be found behind the plow or working in the forests, but rather in leading positions in this branch of the economy.
Although the Jew was not inclined toward agricultural labor, he was at the forefront of commerce in agricultural products. The exchanges for grain, flour, fat, and eggs, to name only a few, were his field of endeavor. He sat in the breadbasket of the German people, and could set the prices higher or lower, depending on what pleased him. In the fall when the farmer was forced to sell his harvest to get the money he needed, prices had to be low. But when over the course of winter and spring these important products were needed by the public, prices had to rise. The difference between the buying and selling prices was the “profit” of the Jewish grain trader, or whatever he was called.
The Jew was significantly better represented in the second branch of the German economy, industry and the trades. Around 25% of the Jews were found in this branch of the economy. Given the Jew’s natural disinclination to working with his hands, one can assume that this percentage was not found in the trades, but only in industry.
But the real domain of Jewry was in the third branch, trade and commerce. Here he was in his element. 59% of the Jews were active in this part of the economy. In comparison, only 17% of the German population worked in this branch.
Some statistics: The board of the Berlin Stock Exchange consisted exclusively of Jews. — Of the 147 board and committee members of the Berlin exchange, 116, or 80%, were Jews.
When one considers the number of department store, which grew both in number and sales year by year, and realizes the steadily increasing Jewish control, it becomes clear why in conjunction with Jewish bank capital Judah’s position in this area was so strong and extensive. Nothing could happen that the Jews did not like.
What had been promised to to the Jew seemed to be fulfilled: “The Lord your God will bless you, as he has promised. You will lend to many peoples, and borrow from none. You will rule over many peoples, but no one will rule over you.”
The Jew seemed to have achieved his promised paradise, where he did not have to labor, where he did not have to earn his bread by the sweat of his brow. This last phrase shows clearly what the Jew thinks of labor. The millions of our German people’s comrades who were forced into involuntary vacations by the failures of the past system certainly would not have seen their unemployment as a blessing, but rather as a curse. The Jew, however, sees labor as a curse imposed on him, so long as he does not succeed in gaining the power that makes it possible for him to make others work for him so that he can live in paradise, or indolence.
Adams is entitled to his views on abortion, but his attempt to assert a moral equivalency between abortion, and the murder of millions of people at the hands of Nazis, is not only offensive but is indicative of a lack of understanding about the Holocaust.
Now, I think I understand your position. You don’t think the unborn are “people.” Well, what are they? Are you even prepared to offer an explanation of when a living fetus becomes a “person”?
Here’s where I can help. There are exactly four reasons routinely given for denying the personhood of the unborn. They follow in no particular order of importance:
1. Size – the unborn are smaller and therefore not persons;
2. Level of development – the unborn are less developed and therefore not persons;
3. Environment – the unborn are not persons because they are still in the womb;
4. Degree of dependency – the unborn are not persons because they must depend on others for survival.I have rebuttals to all of these argument but you do not seem interested in them. Nor did you seem to understand the basic premise of “Aborting Hitler,” which was to assert that the denial of personhood is the motivating force behind Holocausts in general. Because you didn’t get it, now you’re doing it. Do you get it now?

Finally, I must take exception to your decision to sign off using the word “sincerely.” You aren’t sincere. If you were sincere, you would take seriously the argument that the unborn are persons. Then, once you arrived at that conclusion, you would also conclude that abortion is a Holocaust. Abortion provides a clear example of the “systematic industrialized murder of millions.”
Unfortunately, you have become nothing more than a Holocaust denier. The fact that you work for ADL makes you a shameless hypocrite, as well. Of course, you are entitled to lecture someone who sees through your intellectual poverty and moral bankruptcy. But you ought to know better.
John Demjanjuk is dead. He was 91 years old.
In 2010, the man who came to be known as ‘Ivan the Terrible’ and the subject of the most protracted war crimes case in history went on trial in Germany for mass murder committed before most people alive today were born, and nearly 33 years after he was first identified. Last year, Germany convicted Demjanjuk of having participated in the deaths of nearly 30,000 Jewish men, women and children at a number of concentration camps throughout Poland and Germany.
He was sentenced to five years in prison. Because of his age, he was not sent to prison after the conviction. As such, this mass murderer died a free man.
The year Demjanjuk was identified, the Toronto Blue Jays played their first baseball game ever, Star Wars exploded on the movie screens, Elvis Presley died, a new computer company introduced the Apple II, a young standup comedian named Jay Leno first appeared as a guest on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office asked Eliyahu Rosenberg, an Israeli warehouse manager who escaped from the Treblinka extermination complex in 1943, to look at some old photos.
Rosenberg recognized a man from a 1951 immigration photo and identified him as an S.S. ‘Wachman’ (guard) who prisoners called ‘Ivan Grozny’ (Ivan the Terrible). Two other survivors, Pinchas Epstein and Chaim Rajrodski, also recognized the man in the photo, a Ukrainian immigrant living in Seven Hills, a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. The survivors made the identification shortly before the Justice Department created the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) specifically to track down Nazi criminals who illegally entered the country. The man in the photo was John Demjanjuk.
Ivan Demjanjuk was born in 1920 in the Ukrainian village of Duboviye Makharynsty, near Vinitsa. Life was little more than survival, even before Stalin starved to death about 7 million Ukrainians in a campaign to end private land ownership. In 1939, Demjanjuk was drafted into the Soviet Army.
After the Wehrmacht swallowed up much of Europe, Hitler turned his forces towards Moscow. More than 3 million Nazi soldiers were poised to push eastward, and in July of 1941, the German Army crossed the Dnieper River in the Ukraine. Three months later, Kiev fell under siege, where Demjanjuk was wounded. After his recovery in the early months of 1942, he was sent back to the front. By then, the fighting had eased.
All that changed on May 8, when the Luftwaffe bombarded the ancient Ukrainian city of Kerch. The Soviet Army was completely overrun. Within a week, the German Army captured nearly 200,000 prisoners.
So many of the 3 million Soviet POW’s were broken and worn down from combat that nearly one in four chose to work for the Nazis in various capacities. Since many hailed from cultures with a history of anti-Semitism, putting them to work in the death camps was not merely efficient, it was mostly effortless. Among these POW’s was 22-year-old Ivan Demjanjuk.
After the war, Demjanjuk came to the United States with his wife Vera, who he met in a displaced persons camp. He legally changed his name to John and settled in Seven Hills. He was hired by the Ford Motor Company as a mechanic, and worked for Ford until his retirement. But the heart of this tangled saga is where Demjanjuk was and what he did from the time of his capture through the end of World War II.
Since 1977, Demjanjuk was denaturalized, ordered deported to the Soviet Ukraine, extradited to Israel to stand trial for crimes against humanity, convicted and sentenced to death, acquitted on appeal, permitted to return to the United States, had his citizenship restored in Federal court, denaturalized again four years later by the same judge who restored his citizenship, was ordered deported again, appealed to the Supreme Court, which declined to hear the case, faced an extradition request from Germany, spared from deportation by a Federal Judge, again ordered to be extradited to Germany to stand trial for war crimes, spared from extradition because of ill health, found to be faking the seriousness of his illness, and ordered extradited to Germany, where he began being tried for war crimes in 2009.
Today, countless Americans believe Demjanjuk was as he always claimed – a victim of mistaken identity who never participated in the Holocaust.
After the Treblinka survivors identified him, Demjanjuk insisted he was in a POW camp in Chelm, Poland for the duration of the war. During his denaturalization hearing, Justice Department attorneys showed that a POW camp did not exist in Chelm at the time Demjanjuk claimed to have been there. Although he changed his alibi a few times, the Chelm story is the one Demjanjuk used most often. It was the one that he settled on during the closing arguments of his Israeli trial. To this death, it remained his claim.
The cloud of confusion surrounding Demjanjuk can be attributed to his mistaken identity claim, blunders made by the OSI, the fact that Demjanjuk was not a German but, rather, a Ukrainian who served in the Soviet Army, and a gross misrepresentation by American media of the Israeli trial, the successful appeal, and the scope of Demjanjuk’s place in Holocaust history.
This confusion began immediately after the media began covering the story. As reporters wrote about Demjanjuk, his public image morphed into that of an infamous singular Nazi war criminal known in WWII history as “Ivan the Terrible.” Although reports noted that he was a camp guard, his perceived role in the Holocaust grew, perhaps because the brutality attributed to Demjanjuk was extraordinary, even by Nazi standards.
The OSI did nothing to counter the misperception of Demjanjuk’s role, and in fact, nudged it along by withholding from Demjanjuk’s lawyers the findings of a Polish investigation of the death camps in Poland that there may have been additional Ukrainian guards known to inmates as Ivan the Terrible.
The first step on Demjanjuk’s legal odyssey was his denaturalization in 1981. After Federal Judge Frank Battisti stripped him of his citizenship, Judge Robert Angelelli ordered him deported. Demjanjuk’s destination was to be the Soviet Union, specifically the Ukraine. Secretary of State George Schultz approved the deportation. But before Demjanjuk was deported, Israel requested his extradition to stand trial for crimes against humanity, the only crime for which Israel imposes the death penalty. The only time Israel ever imposed the sentence was in 1962, when Karl Adolf Eichmann, the so-called “architect of the Holocaust” was executed. After all appeals, including one before Judge Robert Bork, were exhausted, the United States granted Israel’s request for extradition.
In February of 1986, Demjanjuk was extradited to Israel. Because of defense requests for postponement, the trial itself did not commence for nearly a year. On February 16, 1987, John Demjanjuk stood trial in Israel for crimes against humanity. The single count in the indictment was operating the gas chambers at Treblinka.
The trial took place before a three judge tribunal consisting of
Jerusalem District Court Judges Zvi Tal and Dahlia Dorner and Israeli Supreme Court Justice Dov Levin. Demjanjuk was represented by John Gill and Mark O’Connor, who also represented him during his denaturalization, deportation and extradition hearings in the United States. They were joined by Israeli attorney Yoram Sheftel.
Prosecutors produced abundant evidence that Demjanjuk had “…perpetrated unspeakable acts of cruelty in conducting victims in the
Treblinka concentration camp on the way to their death.” Testimony was graphic and gruesome.
As to the single count in the indictment, the prosecution alleged that the defendant “…operated, with his own hands, the engines which pumped the poisonous exhaust fumes into the gas chambers, thus causing the death of hundreds of thousands of people killed in this manner.”
Sheftel introduced testimony by Ignat Danielchenko, a guard at the Sobibor death camp. (Unlike Auschwitz, which was both a slave labor camp and an extermination factory, Sobibor, Treblinka, Belzec, and Chelmno were created and operated exclusively to exterminate large numbers of people in the shortest possible time.) Danielchenko stated, “I saw Mr. Demjanjuk escorting prisoners in all phases, from the unloading of the trains to the entrance to the gas chamber.”
While such testimony would seem to put Demjanjuk in harm’s way, its purpose was to protect him. Sheftel’s goal was to place Demjanjuk somewhere other than Treblinka during the period in question, when Demjanjuk was allegedly operating the gas chambers at Treblinka.
A principle of law known as the doctrine of specialty prevented Israel from trying Demjanjuk for any crime other than the one for which he was specifically and exclusively extradited. This principle is spelled out in the extradition treaty between Israel and the United States, which states that “a person extradited under the present convention shall not be detained, tried or punished in the territory of the requesting party for any offence other than that for which the extradition has been granted.” For this reason, Sheftel probably assumed that proving Demjanjuk participated in the murder of civilians at Sobibor during the time in question did not hurt his case. But Sheftel, sensing this strategy might have potential drawbacks, abandoned the Sobibor alibi during his closing arguments. So he reverted to Demjanjuk’s original alibi of having been a POW at Chelm.
On February 18, 1988, he was found guilty of the sole allegation in the indictment. Two months later, Demjanjuk was sentenced to death. The conviction and sentence triggered an automatic appeal, but by this time, stories of another ‘Ivan’ had begun to circulate.
Before the appeal began, Demjanjuk’s defense team was joined by former Israeli judge Dov Eitan. Just days before the scheduled start of the hearing, Eitan fell to his death from the 20th floor of the Jerusalem Tower. Although Eitan left no note, Jerusalem police ruled his death a suicide. Two days later, at Eitan’s funeral, Sheftel was seriously injured when a Holocaust survivor threw acid at his face. He was hospitalized and underwent surgery to save his eyesight.
The appeal was heard by a five judge panel presided over by Israeli Supreme Court President Meir Shamgar. Unlike appeals courts in the United States, this tribunal not only accepted new evidence unavailable during the trial, but welcomed it. This distinction permitted Demjanjuk’s attorneys to introduce evidence that became available because of the collapse of the Soviet Union, which occurred during his trial.
This new evidence consisted of depositions taken in the U.S.S.R. from repatriated Ukrainians who were being interrogated about having worked for the Nazis after their capture, some of whom the Soviet Union sentenced to death for their service to the enemy after being captured.
The testimony related to Treblinka, where many served. Some of them mentioned a Ukrainian named Ivan Marchenko, who ran the gas chambers in that camp. They testified that inmates referred to Marchenko as “Ivan Grozny,” Russian for Ivan the Terrible. Although the prosecution served up abundant evidence that Demjanjuk had killed Jewish men, women and children, sometimes in the most gruesome ways imaginable at Treblinka and other camps, he was indicted exclusively for having operated the gas chambers at Treblinka, the activity that in Israeli law elevated his action to a crime against humanity. While the prosecution showed that Demjanjuk murdered countless Jews while serving at Nazi concentration camps including Trawniki, Flossenberg, Regensburg and at *Operation Reinhard facilities such as Solibor and Treblinka, none of these acts were in the original indictment.
The two questions now before the appeals tribunal were if these depositions were acceptable evidence, since those who gave them could not be cross-examined, and if murders and acts of torture not specified in the original indictment could legally uphold his conviction. The Court concluded that the depositions created a reasonable doubt as to the charge in the indictment, and that other actions could not be a factor.
Nevertheless, under a provision in Israeli law, Demjanjuk could have been found guilty of multiple murders the trial showed him to have committed. However, this created its own legal problem because of the doctrine of specialty. As such, the five judge panel concluded that bringing new charges against Demjanjuk would not be legal without first petitioning the United States for another writ of extradition.
Because the evidence indicated that a different ‘Ivan the Terrible’ committed the single act in the original indictment, and in spite of testimony and other evidence that Demjanjuk tortured and murdered prisoners at several camps, including Treblinka, the judges reluctantly acquitted Demjanjuk.
Demjanjuk’s life was spared not only by the Israeli Supreme Court, but by the extradition itself. Since the U.S.S.R. took a dim view of their soldiers working for the Nazis, the Soviet Union would probably have executed Demjanjuk upon his return to the Ukraine, just as it did many of the repatriated Ukrainians whose testimonies indicated a different Ivan worked the Treblinka gassing facility.
He was now free. But he was also a man without a country.
One month before Israel acquitted Demjanjuk, the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals appointed U.S. District Judge Thomas Wiseman to investigate charges of misconduct by the OSI. Wiseman ruled the OSI had played games with the evidence, but did not intentionally or unintentionally frame Demjanjuk. Wiseman also noted that because of Demjanjuk’s Nazi SS service at Sobibor and his unbelievable alibis, concocted to hide all of his Nazi service, Demjanjuk’s behavior contributed to his extradition. Wiseman wrote, “Mr. Demjanjuk’s alibi was so incredible as to legitimately raise the suspicions of his prosecutors that he lied about everything.”
After Israel reversed the conviction, 6th Circuit Judge Gilbert Merritt then ordered Demjanjuk temporarily readmitted to the United States. The court declared that his presence was necessary to assist his attorneys in preparing for an appeal to be allowed to return to the United States permanently.
Merritt’s ruling, and the subsequent ruling by a three-judge panel which included Merritt, that Demjanjuk may remain in the United States indefinitely, cost the judge dearly.
At the time, Merritt was on a short list of Supreme Court nominees,
but outrage in the Jewish community was intense. The Anti-Defamation League, World Jewish Congress and the Simon Wiesenthal Center lodged protests. In the end, President Clinton removed Merritt from consideration.
Although the 405-page acquittal reiterated Demjanjuk’s numerous acts of murder and torture unrelated to the original indictment, American media usually framed the ruling as a validation of his claim of innocence. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported the acquittal “…prove[d] Demjanjuk was not Ivan the Terrible.”
On Demjanjuk’s return to Seven Hills after the acquittal, the family gave Mike Conway, then a reporter for WJW-TV in Cleveland, the exclusive right to broadcast images of Demjanjuk back in the bosom of his loving family. The video, shot in Demjanjuk’s living room, showed a smiling John Demjanjuk playing with a grandchild born during the trial in Israel. Conway began the report over a musical intro of “Tie a Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the Old Oak Tree.”
Because of such coverage, most Americans embraced the Israeli Court’s ruling as an affirmation of his claim that he was an innocent victim of mistaken identity. Demjanjuk’s image as an innocent victim was further solidified with skillful public relations by his principle spokesperson, son-in-law Ed Nishnic.
Nishnic was tireless and unrelenting in his father-in-law’s defense. He rarely stumbled in his role as sculptor of Demjanjuk’s public image. His damage control skills withstood the test even when Demjanjuk received public support from the Ku Klux Klan and the Institute for Historical Review, the anti-Semitic organization created to disseminate the claim that the Holocaust never happened. Nishnic distanced his father-in-law from their support while denouncing Holocaust denial. Nishnic’s campaign to keep Demjanjuk’s image from being associated with Holocaust revisionists nearly met with disaster when Demjanjuk’s principal financial backer began to emerge from the background.
Jerome Brentar was a wealthy Cleveland travel agent who transferred an estimated three million dollars to Demjanjuk. Much of this money, to cover legal fees and travel expenses, came out of Brentar’s own pockets. Brentar never doubted Demjanjuk’s innocence,
but Brentar’s reason for believing in Demjanjuk was different than Nishnic’s. Jerome Brentar was a Holocaust denier. Brentar addressed conferences of the Institute for Historical Review. In his talks before the I.H.R., Brentar insisted that Demjanjuk was innocent, because the crimes he was charged with are a fabrication created by the Jews.
Brentar was born in Croatia and raised in Cleveland In the early post-war years, Brentar, who could speak fluent German, returned to Europe. There he screened thousands of refugees as an employee of the International Refugee Organization. Between 1948 and 1950, Brentar and the late Dr. Edward O’Connor, an official with the Catholic Relief Services, worked together to secretly smuggle Nazis into the United States. In an interview published in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Brentar admitted helping hundreds of Nazis defraud their way into the United States. “Whether he was in the Waffen SS or the Wehrmacht… I would permit them to be considered…” Edward O’Connor’s son Mark would later become one of Demjanjuk’s defense attorneys.
Nishnic quickly responded to news reports about Brentar. He told the Cleveland Free Times, “It’s obviously an attempt to discredit Mr. Demjanjuk by attacking those around him. I don’t think any serious person accepts that Jerry Brentar is a Nazi sympathizer. In all the years I’ve known him, he has never tried to push Holocaust denial on me…. I find it sadly humorous that people are making Mr. Brentar seem like a Nazi-smuggler.”
For years after the acquittal, news stories about Demjanjuk continued to omit any mention of his work in the camps and, as such, buttressed Demjanjuk’s posture as a victim. During this time, his most famous American advocates were Pat Buchanan and James Traficant, the Ohio congressman who was later convicted and sent to prison for taking bribes, filing false tax returns, racketeering, and forcing staff members to perform chores at his farm in Ohio and on his houseboat in Washington. Buchanan continues to author articles sympathetic to Demjanjuk. Traficant has been released from prison, and now hosts a weekly radio talk show in Cleveland.
After Demjanjuk was convicted in Israel, Traficant assisted his attorneys in obtaining previously un-released Justice Department documents, including findings of the Polish investigation that several Ukrainian guards were also known to the inmates as Ivan the Terrible. While these documents were of no use to the appeal in Israel, they did prove crucial to Demjanjuk’s effort to return to the United States. Traficant even proposed a bill in the House calling for the federal government to provide financial compensation for Demjanjuk’s “… pain and suffering.” The motion was not seconded.
Demjanjuk was now home, but was rarely seen in public. He did not venture from his house, except to attend church. The Seven Hills Police Department posted several ‘no trespassing’ signs in his front yard. The blinds on the front windows were drawn closed day and night.
Still, a few Holocaust survivors and their supporters demonstrated in front of Demjanjuk’s home whenever the Demjanjuk case made news. They carried signs reading, “We Know the Truth,” and, “6,000,000 Witnesses Call for Justice!” They chanted “Nazis out of America,” or “Nazis back to the Ukraine.” The chants were not loud. They mostly marched in silence.
On one such occasion Demjanjuk’s next-door neighbor had a brief exchange with a middle-aged demonstrator. The neighbor watched the marchers while sweeping his garage. As they went past his house, he waved his fist at them, shouting that Jews deserve whatever they get because of what they did to Jesus. The demonstrator erupted. “Because you think some Jews killed your God, it’s okay to murder thousands of Jewish children twenty centuries later? So that’s why Jews should die?” A Holocaust survivor quieted his fellow demonstrator, and told him not to have any exchanges with the neighbor, “…no matter what that mamzer [Yiddish for ‘bastard’] shouts at you.”
When a reporter asked the middle-aged demonstrator why Jews demonstrate in a neighborhood where the perception of Demjanjuk as an innocent man seems unshakable and nearly unanimous, he explained that he had “six million reasons” for being there. When asked about the questionable behavior by the OSI and the acquittal in Israel, he replied, “Do you think we don’t know what we’re doing? Or do you believe we’re knowingly hounding an innocent man? The Cleveland Plain Dealer, your newspaper, published a commentary titled ‘It’s Time to Close the Book on the Demjanjuk Case.’ Can you imagine a newspaper telling its readers to stop seeking the truth? We’re out here to demand the book on Demjanjuk be kept open, that the public see Demjanjuk’s past for what it is. We aren’t here for revenge. We aren’t calling for the executioner. We don’t want his head on a platter. We want him to know that we know what he did. We want everyone else to see the truth about Mr. John Demjanjuk. Then we want him deported. He has no right to enjoy the privilege of living in America. He never did.”
Not only was Demjanjuk’s petition to remain in the United States successful, in February of 1998, federal judge Paul Matia restored Demjanjuk’s citizenship. Attorney General Janet Reno formally objected to Matia’s decision, to no avail. However, Matia’s ruling rendered it possible for the Justice Department to bring new charges against Demjanjuk.
The Justice Department did just that, and four years later, Judge Matia, who had restored Demjanjuk’s citizenship, determined that Demjanjuk concealed his role in the Holocaust on his original citizenship application, reversed his decision and revoked Demjanjuk’s citizenship.
In the summer of 2006, Jerome Brentar sued the Demjanjuk family to recover some of the millions he spent trying to help Demjanjuk. During the civil trial, Cleveland businessman Martin Lax agreed to testify on behalf of Demjanjuk or, more accurately, against Brentar. Lax is a Holocaust survivor. Although Lax was certain Demjanjuk was a brutal death camp guard, he found himself in the unenviable position of taking Demjanjuk’s side against a neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier. When Lax was asked why he would put himself in such a position, he explained that Demjanjuk’s crimes, while indefensible, were 60 years in the past. But Brentar’s Holocaust denial and neo-Nazi involvement, was ongoing.
The judge found in favor of Brentar, but reduced his award to $90,000. Members of Demjanjuk’s family helped pay the judgment. Brentar died the following December.
In 2007, Immigration Judge Michael J. Creppy ordered Demjanjuk deported again. His destination this time was to be Poland, Germany or the Ukraine. In May of 2008, the Supreme Court denied Demjanjuk’s petition for review.
One month later, Kurt Schrimm, head prosecutor at the German agency that brings Nazi war criminals to justice, reported that after interviewing numerous witnesses and obtaining documents indicating Demjanjuk’s participation in mass murder at several camps, Germany would seek Demjanjuk’s extradition. In March 2009, a German judge issued an arrest warrant for Demjanjuk.
On May 11, 2009, after filing numerous unsuccessful motions in the United States and Germany, Demjanjuk was finally deported to Germany. Upon arrival in Munich, he was arrested and sent to prison. Two months later, Demjanjuk was formally charged with nearly 28,000 counts of accessory to murder. On November 30, 2009, thirty two years after he was first identified, 89-year-old John Demjanjuk went on trial in Germany.
The sign at the entrance to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp reads “Arbeit Macht Frei.” Work makes you free. For more than one million Jews exterminated at the camp, the slogan’s sardonic irony transformed it into an icon of the Holocaust. While there is no record of Demjanjuk at Auschwitz, he embraced “Arbeit Macht Frei,” when, like countless Soviet POW’s, he chose work for the Nazis as a death camp guard over confinement in a stalag.
Some observers who acknowledge Demjanjuk’s participation in the Holocaust have suggested that perhaps he had no choice, since conditions in German POW camps might have been sufficiently harsh to justify such a decision.
However, in an observation from his classic book, Man’s Search for Meaning, psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl provided a contrary perspective on the moral nature of such a decision:
“We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms, to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
*Operation Reinhard was the name for the construction and operation of Nazi facilities built exclusively for extermination.
During the Holocaust, the Nazis established approximately 15,000 concentration camps in their occupied territories. Although these camps exterminated Jews and others deemed undesirable, those that were part of Operation Reinhard were built for efficiency. The purpose of these highly industrialized factories was to put to death the greatest number of Jewish men, women and children in the shortest period of time.
These facilities included Belzec, Kulmhof – Chelmno, Maidanek, Sobibor, and Treblinka.
Demjanjuk’s ID card was issued at Trawniki, a forced labor camp that also served as a training facility for non-German nationals who would later be assigned to the Reinhard facilities.
In the 88 Precepts the 58th reads: “Tyrannies teach what to think. Free men learn how to think.” As our White race now goes over the edge of the abyss into possible extinction, it is imperative that if there is any chance of saving our kind we had better learn not only how to think, but how to do so with inspiration and logic.
But first, as always, let me point out the realities of our situation, so that you will know that we must now speak with the eloquence of emergency and act with the fanaticism of desperation. The life of a race is in the wombs of its women. Today, about 2% of the earth’s population is White female of child-bearing age or younger. In other places I have detailed how this came about, so I will not repeat it here. The occupation governments of America and the other once-White countries deny us not only White nations, but White schools, White organizations, White neighborhoods and everything necessary for our survival as a biological and cultural entity. It is deliberate, malicious genocide. An example of their deceitful words is the term “minorities” for the colored world, while we approach extinction.
We have watched as American police and military powers were used to destroy us ever since at least the Civil War. Examples are the 101st Airborne using bayonets on young, White girls to integrate the schools of Dixie. Our enemies knew full well that the inevitable result of racial integration is a percentage of interracial matings each year, leading to the death of our race, as has happened in India, Persia, Carthage and many other places in the past. This time it is happening worldwide. Then, we remember how mounted Boston police under Federal edicts beat the White mothers of South Boston into bloody submission when they protested the integration and destruction of their neighborhood schools. Translate: “The murder of their race”. Then, there was the destruction as a racial state of our ancient and sacred European homeland by American forces. This, after the Germanic people attempted to perform their traditional duty as defenders of the race, just as they did against the North African Moors and the hordes of Genghis Khan. Were it not for the Germanic peoples of our race, the beauty of our women and the Western civilization we enjoy would have been aborted long ago.
Today we have the rewriting of history to credit the deeds of our ancestors to the colored races, the never-ending promotion of mixing between the last White women and colored males, the murder and false imprisonment of White people who resist the judeo-american, judeo-christian murder of our race. The murders of Bob Mathews, Kathy Ainsworth, Gordon Kahl, Arthur Kirk, the Weavers and others are further evidence that the Zionist occupation government will stop at nothing to accomplish the extermination of the White race. I could continue almost without end detailing the genocidal intent and practices of America, but if the preceding is not sufficient evidence, then you are beyond reason or logic.
So, what has this to do with learning how to think instead of what to think? Well, it does not take a genius or rocket scientist to learn from history. Our masters taught the French, the Russians, the English, the Spanish, the Italians and others for thousands of years that the country or political system they were born in or lived in was superior. So, by the hundreds of millions we have slaughtered each other in senseless wars. Earlier we had Persians, Greeks, Romans, Goths and others doing the same thing. Although not of our race, we see Sunni and Shiite Moslems butchering each other simply because they were reared to believe a particular religious tenant.
Religious belief has been the single biggest weapon against our kind, too. More people have been murdered, tortured and destroyed in the name of Jesus than any other cause in all history, including the artificial war between the two jewish concepts called capitalism and communism. In the 30 Years War alone over one third of Western Europe slaughtered each other over whether Jesus was Protestant or Catholic. It still goes on in Ireland today. Of course, “The propaganda of the Victors becomes the history of the Vanquished”, so we never hear of all the millions the church murdered and tortured in its 1000 year war to destroy the White man’s native and organic religion of Wotan/Woden/Odin. How many know that Charlmagne, the Holy Roman Emperor, called a treaty meeting of 5000 Wotanist Saxon leaders from central Europe in 787 ce? As was the custom among Wotanists, arms were not carried into treaty conferences. The treacherous Charlemagne then surrounded the Saxons with a Christian army and beheaded them in front of an audience of church dignitaries. By such methods a new belief was forced on Europe. In effect, the Jews hired the Roman Empire to murder anyone in Europe who would not accept a new religion with Jews as “God’s Chosen People.” The White world has been collectively insane ever since.
Oh, I know that those with emotional or financial investments in the existing religious and political power systems will attack what I tell you with their versions of history. I have shown in my books how to verify truth in historical claims. One concept is to look for who benefits? No one but Jews can possibly benefit from a religion in which Jews are called “God’s Chosen People.” Yes, I know the propaganda says the church persecuted the Jews. The fable of persecution is central to Jewish power. Indeed, the alleged Holocaust is the religion of Jews. Torquemada, the sadistic butcher of the Inquisition, was a jew. Many popes, including the current Polish pope, were Jews.
The “signs” are there, but you must learn how to think. Look at the Great Seal of the United States. I think both sides of the seal are on a dollar bill. You will see the Star of David over the head of the eagle, just as it appears on the Israeli flag. And you will see the All Seeing Eye of Judah over the pyramid. In the book “Mystery Religions and the Seven Seals” I showed how to decode the Jewish cabalism in the forming of both America and the Judeo-Christian religion.
You see, my friends, if you are reared to believe that God should be called Thor and that thunder is his war wagon in the sky, then you will believe that fable unto death. Once you might have been reared to believe that God was called Zeus for the top of Mount Olympus. With enough torture and murder our people were taught that God was a Jew, born of a virgin, who raised himself from the dead. Undoubtedly, our people will believe that the cow jumped over the moon if indoctrinated early enough in life. Self-evident laws of nature are ignored, even denied, when belief controls the mind.
Political indoctrination is no different. Wave a flag and announce that it stands for liberty and our people will mindlessly kill each other by the millions. Does “forced bussing” sound like liberty? Does the murder of our race sound like liberty? Do America’s never-ending wars from Dixie, to Italy and Germany, to Korea, to Vietnam, to Panama, to Iraq and dozens of lesser wars and occupations sound like liberty?
It is centuries past time that we learned how to think. Perhaps one fourth of the children in America at this time are White and our women are leaving us by the droves under the prodding of Judeo-Christianity and the Jewish media. The vilification, defamation and attempted destruction of Germans and all things related to Germany, including its territory is in historical terms a relatively new phenomenon. It is also the most virulent ever experienced by any group of peoples. That we Germans have contributed to this insanity is quite clear and in many instances utterly incomprehensible, as in the case of Marlene Dietrich, Thomas Mann, Pastor Niemoeller, Admital Canaris or General Halder for instance. One of the major causes however is an underlying inferiority complex by other nations, real or imagined something skilfully used by World Jewry, which has since the early 19th. century done everything conceivable to destroy us and Western Civilization as we know it. Why? Because we Germans have in the past 200 or-so-years been the main-stay of Western Civilization. We inherited it and enriched it immensely in every area of human endeavor, far out of proportion to our numbers or geographic area. This in turn gave rise to a feeling of superiority in the German, which unfortunately caused an attitude which has been perceived as arrogant by others even if under examination we are no more arrogant, and a damn sight less so, than the French, the English, not to forget the most chauvinistic people on earth (and one might ask, on what basis?) the Poles.
The Jew is incapable of tolerating any other people and many prominent Jews have openly admitted this as their reason for constantly attempting to destroy civilizations. In order to subvert the Germans, their pride, self confidence and their very soul have to be destroyed first. This has so far been accomplished by a combination of incessant international vilification, by the invariable de-humanization of the Germans in movies, books, “Eye-witness reports” (strangely never backed up by any solid evidence, as well as getting more shrill, more insane and intense the further away from the actual events we move time-wise), by the utter destruction of all Germanic virtues and the corruption of their youth. Everything German is ‘hateful’ and pointing out the ugliness, the de-humanizing injustice that this represents is screechingly denounced as ‘hate-speech’. Hate, as defined by the Jewish masters of the world is anything German or anyone who defends Germany’s honor and record. This has been done to the degree, that reasonable people go into a rage when confronted by someone who merely says: “Prove Germann perfidy. Prove German crimes. Prove the Holocaust. Prove the existence of gas chambers. Prove the photos and movies and stories are true.* Prove it with FORENSIC, DOCUMENTARY evidence, as required in any court of law!” Normal, decent people go ballistic and mindlessly screech “Nazi!”
* At the Nurnberg trials numerous photos were introduced as ‘evidence’, photos which in reality showed murdered, roasted alive German women and children at Dresden in February 1945. Movies were introduced, which had been professionally made using half-starved German prisoners Of War, who had been put into Concentration Camp inmate uniforms and had been placed behing barbed wire fences. The incredible dishonesty of the English-speaking world which engineered these things surely seeks its equal in the annals of recorded history.
On the other hand prove of anything anti-German is not only superflous, it’s regarded as wholly unnecessary. German guilt is a priori, it’s gospel, it’s a religion and the more absurd, the more people believe it, just like a religion. Indubitable proof-positive that the Jew lives by the lie however is ‘hate’. 1933: World Jewry declares war on Germany
World Jewry dispatches a Herr Untermeyer to the United States who makes the insane claim that tens of thousands of Jews are being are being murdered in broad daylight in Germany. That he was called a liar of the worst stripe by every foreigner who visited Germany at the time predictably had no effect on his Jewish zeal for dishonesty, lies and subterfuge.
1933: World Jewry declares a world-wide boycott of German goods, a boycott which almost bankrupted my country at the time, but which failed due to Hitler’s tough stance and his policies which began to make Germany more and more independent of international machinations.
1933: Toward the very end of the year, Hitler gave a speech in which he publicly outlined his plans, his desire for peace, his admiration for the British Empire, his Hands-Off the British Empire policy and his desire to arrive at fair and equitable internationl agreements. He denounced the Versailles treaty and announced his intention of cancelling all that had to do with these infamous treaties. He also informed the League Of Nations that if they would continue their anti-German stance, he would quit this organization. No foreign politician (with the exceptioin of Jew Rossevelt in the White House) thought any of his statements to be ‘extreme’, ‘threatening’ or unreasonable.
1934: Germany concludes a friendship pact with Marshal Pilsudski of Poland, much to the chagrin of England and the Jew-led US, who had hoped this pact would fail. (After Pilsudskis death in 1936, England and the US used every ruse imaginable to induce Poland to break the treaty. England and the US made every attempt at stirring up hate in Poland against Germany. As we know, unfortunately they succeeded in their diplomatic treachery and essentially maneuvered Germany into a war. After the defeat of Poland, Hitler ordered a 24-hour Honor-Guard at the tomb of Marshall Pilsudski. Had Pilsudski lived, I dare say, there wouldn’t have been a WW2. 1934: The prominent (and incidentally excellent) Jewish writer Emil Ludwig (I think that was his pen name only) said: “Hitler will have his war, whether he wants one or not”. This at a time, when war was the furthest thing from Hitler’s mind. He had after all inherited a bankrupt, morally desperate country without any military to speak of, a country in need of everything. (Considering Ludwig was an insider and well connected with Jewish leaders throughout the world, it is a safe bet to say he knew something!)
1934: Hitler crushes by force a rebellion brewing within his own party. Many leaders all over the world praised Hitler’s decision to use force against his opponents because had he not, a revolution with possibly terrible consequences would have engulfed Germany.
1936: Jablonsky, the top Jew in the slavic world stated in a speech: “Germany is a threat to world Jewry and therefore must be destroyed”. (This was after the Nurnberg Laws had been passed, laws which were less restrictive of Jews than present-day laws in Israel are restrictive of none-Jews!)
1936: Churchill stated in a conversation: “Germany is getting too strong. We must smash her”.

1936: The Hindenburg, the greatest airship the world had ever seen crashes in new Jersey under mysterious circumstances putting a halt to one of modern history’s greatest air-transport developments forever. To this day rumors persist that this magnificent air-ship was sabotaged. Whether American authorities did their best to discover what happened is unfortunately improbable.
1938: The Polish Ambassador to Germany writes a long letter to his home office describing the outstanding level of culture and civilization of Germany’s cities. He describes how depressing by comparison are the cities of Poland.

Almost all modern ships were sent on maneuvers to Alaska. In order to make things look good, Roosevelt kept one or two modern navy ships at Hawaii. Roosevelt sacrificed the entire garrison on Hawaii in order to maneuver the US into the war, thereby making it a world war. (An interesting book, shock-full of information. Jump ahead:
1941: The first plan on how to totally murder an entire nation is published in the USA to great applause of the White House, Time Magazine and everyone else with influence. The plan has gone down in history as the Kaufman Plan and is entitled “Germany Must Perish”. It is such a hatefilled, insane proposition, that any psychiatrist worth his diploma would have the author committed to an institution for the criminally insane. Alas, because Theodore Kaufman was a top dog in the Jewish community, he was not only hailed, but made tons of money with his insanity, because every Jew and governmental official bought a copy. It pays to remember that this ‘plan’ was conceived and printed at a time when the USA was neutral and not officially involved in any war with Germany.
1941: Winston Churchill’s eminence gris, a certain Professor Lindemann, scientifically (!) worked out a plan to murder the German civilian population by air attack. This plan, which has gone down in history as the “Lindemann Plan”, resulted in the murder of about one million women and children, roasted to death (very literally roasted, even melted (!), the heat having been so intense that bodies ‘melted’ and formed a horrible morass in the basemets of houses), the total destruction of the majority of German civilian population centers, the destruction of inestimable cultural monuments, buildings, museums and the like. This is truly the first and possibly only scientifically designed plan to murder an entire population and its horror cannot be overstated. This Professor Lindemann was educated at Darmstadt University and emigrated to England in the late 1920′s. He is listed today as a Lord Cherwell, a monster of indescribable proportions, a Jew of course. It must be remembered here that no plan of any kind for the destruction of world Jewry has ever been found, and frankly, even if there had been such a plan, in view of history it certainly would have been justified.
1943: Early in the year Roosevelts personal advisor and friend, the truly revolting looking Jew Henry Morgenthau Jr. wrote the Morgenthau Plan, the third plan for the annihilation of the German people. All three plans were written in the English-speaking world by English-speaking Jews! and there are still Germans who who don’t believe the Jew and the Englishman is our deadly enemy?? What the hell does it take? The Morgenthau Plan quite seriously stated, that if implemented about 40 million Germans would die of starvation. This plan, a good part of which actually was implemented after the war, was hailed as a milestone. It is interesting to note here, that Morgenthau’s father planted falsified diplomatic dispatches from the Turkish embassy in 1915, dipatches which helped maneuver the US into the first war to destroy Germany (1914-1918).
1944: “I am not interested in any military targets. What I want to know is how we are going to burn alive 600.000 German refugees in Dresden” – Winston Churchill
1945: After the possibly most heroic struggle for its existence in the history of the world, Germany surrenders. The German governemnt is humiliated unbelievably by the British. Men are screamed at, told to strip, forced to undergo body searches, Fieldmarshall Milch’s arm is broken during his arrest by a British (what else?) colonel, several German generals and lower ranked soldiers commit suicide after witnessing the horrible, de-humanizing treatment accorded their superiors.
1945: Millions of German women and children are kidnapped and shipped to Siberia as slaves. Only a small part ever returns home, a home now belonging to none-German strangers who abuse, rape and murder them. An interesting book about this is: “The Whip , My Homecoming”, ISBN 0940715 01 8 . This book is prohibited in Germany.
1945: The Americans and the French create the most inhuman prison system in world history, also called “Eisenhower’s Death Camps” by the Canadian press of the time. About one million German soldiers are murdered there by disease, starvation, neglect, lack of shelter and hygenic conditions of the most horrendous nature. I suggest Canadian historian’s James Bacque’s book “Other Losses”, ISBN 0-7737-2269-6. I have heard that this book has in the meantime undergone several revisions, including one which minimizes the horrors, in order for it to be permitted to be published in the US. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of this, but I do know, that the ISBN number I furnished herein is not “Cleaned Up” in any manner, but is the original. Again, prohibited in Germany.
1946: The German government and some military leaders are humiliatingly put on trial at Nurnberg, a trial in which all legalities are suspended with, a trial in which defense is practically not allowed, in which hear-say evidence is accepted as ‘fact’, including hear-say evidence by people no one has ever been able to locate! Photographs of piles of burned bodies are shown and it is claimed these photos are of dead Jews, when in truth they were photos of dead German women and children, burned to a crisp during the genocidal, insane mass murder by British and Americans air forces at the city of Dresden, earlier in the year 1945. Germans are routinely tortured by Americans and British ‘soldiers’, practically all Jews. Many were executed on falsified evidence, evidence which in any court in any land, at any time, wouldn’t even be permitted by the judge. It has been suggested that they were ritually (Kosher) murdered before being being hung. This claim is based on the official American photographs taken of the bodies after their death.. Whether this is so or not cannot be determined. What is however proven is that they were all strangled to death over a long period of time. The executions lasted several hours, almost an entire day during which the condemned men had to listen to the death-rattle of the man being slowly strangled to death before them. There were no autopsies. Autopsies would have shown the executions to have been inhuman murders. The bodies were burned and the ashes were dumped in the Isar river. The wives and children, the parents and siblings of the murdered Germans were not even given the courtesy of a notification. These horrors are today protected by law in Germany. It is illegal in Germany to question the Nurnberg trials. If any further proof of the present-day enslavement of the Germans is needed I don’t know what that could possibly be. The English chief prosecutor was a certain Sir Shawcross who engaged in a virulent 5 hour (!) diatribe, filled with inaccuracies, total lies and innuendos including smearing the great German poet and scientists, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

In early July 2003 Sir Shawcross died peacefully at his home in England. He was 101 years of age at the time of his demise. He is proof that one does not pay for injustices committed during ones lifetime, no matter how heinous. He lived in total peace off a tremendous government pension, honored and respected by his peers, his country and the legal community in the English speaking world. In reality what we have here is a murderer, who was hiding in a judicial robe, a murderer far more evil and virulent than let’s say, a Charles Manson – type. He not only gave a speech, which as a man in the highest government circles he had to know, was full of the worst wartime propaganda and out-and-out lies, but he participated in the slaughter of men who had, for the most part done no more than their duties, something he was well aware of. He let himself become part of the most vile judicial proceedings known to man, a “Show Trial”, in which the outcome is pre-determined, in which all rules of law are dispensed with, in which known perjured testimony is presented as fact, in short he committed every crime against the law known to man, all hidden by ‘legalities’ which were no more legal, honest or forthright than the worst parts of the Salem witchcraft trials. The Salem trials at least were held in an atmosphere of abject ignorance and superstition and the judges deep down truly believed they were doing the correct thing. At Nurnberg however, the evil was so monstrous, that it is an impossiblity that these men actually believed in their cause. They were, to a man no more than thugs in legal robes, bent on murdering and torturing innocent men.
This self-same monster, Lord Shawcross, had plenty of time to reflect upon his actions and his personal vileness, all in the comfort of butler-attended evenings in ‘The Club’, that venerable British institution were horrors in human form puke lies at each other, swilling French cognac and smoking Cuban cigars at the expense of the English tax payers who are forever kept on the level of brutal soccer hoodlums waving the Union Jack and mindlessly howling slogans when not beating someone to a bloody pulp in true British fashion. As time went on, Shawcross began to fear for his own existence, for his precious British club-life which he saw ominously threatened by Soviet communism. Here’s what happened;

Semantic arguments are a sideshow when the subject is the destruction of peoples, writes Rawiri Taonui, adjunct professor of indigenous studies at AUT.
Jewish Council president Stephen Goodman’s criticism of Keri Opai’s view that Maori colonial experiences compare to a holocaust is simplistic.
He labelled the claim an ignorant attempt to elevate Maori grievances that trivialises and diminishes the genocide of European Jews.
However, several scholars have taken issue with Jewish claims to exclusive use of the term holocaust. For instance, it excludes millions of other victims of the Nazi extermination including socialists, homosexuals, the disabled, Romani (Gypsies), Slavs, Poles and Soviet prisoners of war (2.8 million Russian POWs died in one eight-month period).
Used for four centuries in Europe to describe various massacres, others argue the Armenians have the first claim to its formal use. The Ottoman Empire caused one million Armenian deaths during World War I. Winston Churchill termed that a holocaust. In 1922 a now eminent poem titled The Holocaust was composed, and in the following year a book The Syrma Holocaust appeared.
After World War II, holocaust was used to describe the bombings of Dresden and Hiroshima, the 1930s Stalin-induced Ukrainian Great Famine and Japan’s suppression of Korea and Manchuria.
From the 1950s onwards, holocaust was increasingly used to refer to the Nazi genocide, often as a translation of the Jewish descriptor shoah (catastrophe) or the Yiddish term churben (destruction). Nora Levin’s book The Holocaust: The Destruction of European Jewry appeared in 1968.
The unqualified formal use of “Holocaust with a capital H” as the terror of the Jews did not come about until after the 1978 TV mini-series of the same name starring Meryl Streep. A majority of the world’s named Holocaust centres date from then.
Holocaust with a small “h” continues to be used to describe events such as African slavery, Khmer Rouge Cambodia, the Rwanda slaughter and indigenous colonial histories.
While I believe Holocaust defines the Jewish experience – the horrific pinnacle of industrial-scale human extermination – I also understand why indigenous peoples use the term, not just to define their experience, but more importantly to highlight the denial of their experience.
Writers such as David Stannard and Ward Churchill, who attest the colonisation of the Americas was a holocaust, argue that condemnations like Mr Goodman’s actually reinforce the denial of horrors perpetrated upon indigenous populations.
That denial has a history. Polish Jew Raphael Lemkin coined the term “genocide” in 1943 providing a broad based definition including physical, political, social, biological and cultural genocide. The latter was applicable to indigenous contexts, Lemkin arguing genocide could be immediate or cumulative over time.
Historian David Cesarani went further. He said over the longer term the oppression of colonised peoples can be more costly than the Holocaust.
Lemkin subsequently drafted a UN Convention on Genocide in 1946. The Soviet Union opposed his definitions because of its record of political suppression. The United States, France and Britain did so as well because of their colonial records.
When the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (UNCPPCG) was adopted two years later, the reference to cultural genocide had been effectively expunged. Administered under the Rome Statute (1998) and International Criminal Court (2002), Article 2 defines genocide as any acts intended to destroy a national, ethnic, racial or religious group such as killing, causing serious bodily or mental harm, inflicting particular living conditions, preventing birth and forcibly removing children.
With an emphasis squarely on state “intent”, the outcome has been that Western European countries have been able to prosecute leaders from weaker developing and Eastern Europe countries, while exonerating themselves for any colonial transgressions on the basis that they were the inadvertent consequences of “civilising” projects.
In 1993, the former British colonies of Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States (Canzus) opposed the draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) which included prohibitions against “ethnocide” and “cultural genocide”. As a result the terms “cultural destruction” and “forced assimilation” were moved into a separate section, and ethnocide and cultural genocide replaced by genocide, which by default referral to the 1948 Convention and Rome Statute, again protected Western countries with colonial baggage.
UNDRIP was passed at the UN General Assembly in 2007 – 143 countries voted in support, only the Canzus four voted against.
In the search for due recognition, writers and academics continue to use the terms cultural genocide and holocaust to describe colonisation in the Pacific, Americas, Tibet, East Turkmenistan and other places.
When Tariana Turia made her holocaust reference in 2000, Judy Sedley from the Wellington Jewish Community Centre said that might be appropriate if Maori used the term with a small “h”.
Posterity might determine that the Jewish Holocaust belongs alongside an Armenian and other holocausts and “Colonial Genocide” might describe many indigenous experiences.
In a debate about honouring by acknowledgement the inestimable numbers of humans over many generations who suffered in this way, those who condemn indigenous peoples lack the humanity and grace of Lemkin. Suffering is never a competition.
Boutiques in the capital Bangkok have begun selling the garments showing the dictator as a Teletubby, panda or Ronald McDonald.
The tops, costing between £4 and £7.50, have sparked outrage with visitors.
But one vendor tried to justify selling the items — saying they are very popular with the local youth.
The shop owner named only as Hut said: “Some foreigners get upset [when they see the T-shirts on sale] they come to my shop and complain.

Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Los Angeles, which monitors neo-Nazi activities worldwide, agrees that manifestations of Nazi chic in the region largely come down to sheer ignorance.
But he insisted locals should wise up about Hitler and his harmful ideology. He said: “If the Nazis had won the war, Hitler’s racist ideology would have eventually targeted all races he deemed inferior, including Asians.”
WASHINGTON – In the late 1980s, when organizers of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum were searching for Nazi-era artifacts, they sought to tell a story that was industrial in its magnitude and horrifying in its detail.
Little known outside the Holocaust Museum is that many of the objects borrowed from Poland almost a quarter-century ago for the then-new museum were on 20-year loans, and over the past few years, those loans have expired. In some cases, the museum has returned objects, renegotiated loans or exchanged existing materials, such as shoes, suitcases and prayer shawls, for equivalent pieces.
Several members of the team that built the exhibition, one of the most visited in Washington, are concerned that the drab wooden barracks from Auschwitz that give visitors a chilling sense of the daily brutality of life under the Nazis may have to be returned to Poland, leaving a prominent hole in what they call the exhibition’s basic narrative.
Sara Bloomfield, the museum’s director, said some objects have already been returned or exchanged, but visitors were unlikely to notice any significant change to the exhibition. But she acknowledged negotiations are under way to keep the barracks on the museum’s third floor.
“It is our priority to keep the barracks in the exhibition,” Bloomfield said. “We are in negotiations with our Polish partners about how to do that.”
If the museum loses important pieces such as the barracks, “the whole veracity of the place will go,” said Martin Smith, a documentary filmmaker who helped craft the exhibition’s focus on narrative. “The physicality of those objects speaks volumes.”
Witold Dzielski, first secretary of the Polish Embassy, said he sympathizes with the museum’s desire to keep the barracks.
“All the other issues are being solved pretty easily,” he said of the smaller objects that have been returned or exchanged. “But in the case of the barracks, it is a particularly difficult situation. There was an agreement, and according to Polish law, there is no way that the barracks cannot be returned.”
Elie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor and prominent author, issued a statement encouraging the barracks’ retention.
“I fervently hope that the Polish government and the Museum will find a way for the barracks to remain on view,” he wrote. “The museum is of extraordinary importance as it is. There are few institutions in the world that have done for remembrance as well and as much as this museum.”
