DOJ Establishes Alabama Civil Rights Unit in Wake of Illegal Immigration Crackdown

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

The Justice Department will establish its first civil rights unit in the southern state of Alabama, the agency said Tuesday—a development that comes in the wake of the state’s crackdown on illegal immigration, which raised concerns about Alabama’s compliance with federal laws.

While the unit wasn’t formed as a direct result of Alabama’s immigration law—parts of which have been blocked by federal courts—officials said it would examine issues related to immigrants and also matters involving fair housing laws, police brutality claims, compliance with federal disability laws and minority protection.

Attorneys from the unit based in Birmingham will be responsible for both criminal prosecutions and civil lawsuits to enforce civil rights laws.

Assistant U.S. Attorney General Tom Perez said the unit will ensure that the federal government has a continuing eye on civil rights issues in Alabama, which was a hotbed of unrest during the civil rights movement half a century ago.

“This is about sustainability . . . of civil rights enforcement,” Perez said during a news conference held at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

Birmingham is the eighth U.S. city out of 94 with U.S. attorney offices to have a civil rights unit. The nearest similar unit is in Memphis, Tenn.

Muslim Veil Ban Sparks Riot and Reflection in France

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Sixteen months after France passed a law making full-faced veils, also known as niqabs, illegal in the country, simmering resentment and outright protest still exists within the country’s Muslim community.

Just two weeks ago in Marseille, as a number of Muslim families celebrated the end of the Ramadan fasting period with midnight meals, two patrolling policemen happened upon a woman wearing such a veil. Standing in front of the Grand Sunna Mosque, the police challenged the woman’s niqab, demanding that she remove it. She refused.

As the confrontation grew increasingly volatile, young bystanders stepped in, claiming that the police had no business patrolling the predominantly Muslim neighborhood at the late hour, or accosting its citizens. Eventually, the police and dozens of bystanders got to pushing, and the scene exploded into what would later be called a riot during a meeting of France’s National Assembly in Paris. Police reinforcements poured in to quell the battle soon after it started, but the incident, which took place on July 24, remains the largest resistance to the veil ban since its implementation.

Though France’s larger and more moderate Muslim organizations have called for their followers to respect the law of the nation, more fundamentalist and radical Muslim worshippers have little respect for the rule. Grand Sunna, which had been converted from a simple storefront, is reportedly home to some of the Marseille’s more radical preachers.

“For young militants, this ban upsets them,” Nassera Benmarnia, who heads the local Muslim Family Union, told the Washington Post. “But most people just want to be left alone.”

France is home to Europe’s largest Muslim population, but the niqab ban has been supported unilaterally in the country’s politics. For the second consecutive year, the U.S. State Department condemned the ban as an infringement on freedom of choice in its annual report on religious freedom. The French Interior Ministry announced on the ban’s anniversary that 299 women had been given citations similar to traffic tickets for wearing full-face veils.

Similar bans are in the process of being put in place in Belgium and the Netherlands, reflecting a growing unease among Western Europe’s Christian majority. Cultural shifts are not the only source of tension between the two communities, as Muslim immigrants have been charged with burdening social service departments and taking work away from native citizens in the midst of the region’s economic crisis.

Bachmann, Gaffney, and the GOP’s Anti-Muslim Culture of Conspiracy

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

Earlier this month, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) appeared on the FOX Business show Money Rocks to make the case for depriving the children of immigrants of their 14th Amendment rights. Gohmert claimed that on a recent airplane trip to the Middle East, one of his traveling companions had struck up a conversation with a grandmother who described her family’s involvement in a Hamas plot to send pregnant women to the United States. Gohmert summarized the lesson for viewers this way: “We’re bringing them over here on tourist visas, some illegally, letting them be born here and saying, ‘This is an American citizen. So come back in 20, 25 years when you’re ready to blow us up.’”

It’s a bizarre story. But the fact that he’s prepared to cite it as a basis for American immigration reform supplies some useful context for what happened two weeks later, when Gohmert joined four other Republican members of Congress, including Michele Bachmann, in asking the Department of Defense, the State Department, and other departments to investigate whether the U.S. government is being infiltrated by Muslim extremists.

In particular, the five Republicans singled out Huma Abedin, a long-time aide to Hillary Clinton, in theirletter to the State Department. Abedin, the letter noted, “has three family members—her late father, her mother, and her brother—connected to Muslim Brotherhood operatives and/or organizations. Her position provides her with routine access to the Secretary and to policy-making.”

In this odd age, partisan hysteria and conspiracy theories have become a common feature of the American political landscape. But the anti-Abedin attack was too much even for fellow Republicans. To his credit, Sen. John McCain publicly declared that the letter constituted “an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American, and a loyal public servant.” (He also debunked its factual claims.) Ed Rollins, Bachmann’s former campaign chief, wrote an op-ed for FOX calling his old boss’ attack on Abedin “extreme,” “dishonest,” and “vicious.”

The backlash against the Bachmann Five reassures us that there is some residual spirit of decency and fair play remaining in Washington politics. Still, many observers are left to wonder at the sheer ludicrousness of the implicit accusation against Abedin. Aside from random airplane encounters with Arab grandmothers, where did the accusers get the idea that some sort of Islamist “stealth jihad” is taking control of Washington from within? And how many other Americans share this belief?

As I discovered during the research for my 2011 book on conspiracy theories,Among The Truthers, such ideas have become quite common on the right-wing side of the American political spectrum. At Tea Party events, I often heard speakers argue—usually on the basis of scattered anecdotes, like the one Gohmert related on FOX—that sharia is taking over the United States; and that the White House itself already has become a fifth column in this insidious campaign.

One large right-wing event that I attended in late 2011—held in Nashville, Tenn., under the auspices of the Sharia Awareness Action Network—was dedicated entirely to this theme. The controversy over the Bachmann Five prompted me to revisit my notes and recordings from that day. As it turns out, one of the keynote speakers was the very activist whose 2010 book, Sharia: The Threat to America, has become the de facto bible for Bachmann and like-minded neo-McCarthyites: Washington activist Frank Gaffney.

***

The conference, entitled “The Constitution or Sharia: Preserving Freedom,” took place at the Cornerstone Church in suburban Nashville, a mega-church with a history of hyperpatriotic stunts. (In honor of July 4, 2010, dirt had been spread over the floor of the church sanctuary, and a professional rodeo with live bulls was held—followed by an indoor fireworks display and then a sermon called “No More Bull.”) Not all the speakers at the conference were religious Christians, but the entire event had a decidedly Evangelical tone to it. “We’ve got to put on the whole armor of God because we are in a spiritual battle for the soul of our country,” declared Bishop E. W. Jackson in a blistering invocation. “I don’t care whether you’re talking about Wall Street Occupiers or White House Occupiers, we’ve got to do the same thing for all of them … We’re going to win this battle because the favor of God is on the United States of America. This country is not an accident. This country is a providential nation ordained by almighty God.”

Man sentenced for smuggling illegal aliens in car trunk

Saturday, July 14th, 2012

An El Centro man has been sentenced to federal prison for smuggling four illegal entrants from California to Dateland, two of whom were in the trunk of a car.

On July 12, U.S. District Judge Susan R. Bolton sentenced Israel Corona, 32, to 60 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release, according to a news release issued Friday by the office of the U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona.

Corona pleaded guilty in March to aiding and abetting the transportation of illegal aliens.

According to court documents, on Feb. 5, 2012, Corona aided and abetted his codefendant, the driver of a 2012 Toyota Camry, in transporting four illegal aliens from El Centro to Dateland.

Two of the illegal entrants were placed in the trunk of the car. Corona acknowledged that he knew the passengers were illegal aliens and that he intended to assist them in remaining in the U.S. unlawfully.

Shady agents are to be blamed for illegal immigration from India

Sunday, July 1st, 2012

Immigration officials from the UKAustralia and Canadacame together in Chandigarh last Tuesday to warn would-be immigrants of “the dangers of being misled by unscrupulous immigration agents”. This comes in the backdrop of a growing number of illegal immigrants being deported from these countries.

A report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), released in 2010, hit the panic button. Titled “Smuggling of Migrants from India to Europe and in Particular to UK: A Study on Punjab and Haryana“, the report has found that every year more than 20,000 young men from Punjab attempt irregular immigration.

What is even more alarming is that the pattern of irregular immigration from India is spreading to other states such as Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The UNODC study found that of 47% cases of irregular immigration related to Europe, a fourth were related to the UK.

Agents Beware

One of the main reasons for fraud is that some potential migrants do not have the option of legal migration due to lack of opportunities for skilled immigration. Further, there is a proliferation of agents and sub-agents in rural and semi-urban regions of Punjab, who facilitate irregular immigration.

The UK has now joined forces with Canada and Australia to educate and warn prospective immigrants of the dangers of irregular and illegal immigration. One of the most important messages that comes out of this joint initiative is: stay away from unscrupulous immigration agents.

“We have been working together with the UK Border Agency, Australian Department of Immigration as well as the United States Citizenship & Immigration Services and Immigration New Zealand for some time now. It helps us share information and also work together with the Indian authorities to combat immigration fraud in India.

Our message to the applicants from sensitive regions such as Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat is to avoid getting duped by unscrupulous agents. There is a lot of information available on our websites and Canada has a system of registered and authorised immigration consultants for those who need help,” says Sidney Frank, Canada’s area director for immigration in South Asia.

Fraud Does not Pay

More and more people are immigrating to countries such as Australia and Canada every year. Fraud is a serious offence and can lead to severe penalties in India and travel bans to various countries. “There is an increase in the number of visa applicants from India both for skilled categories and students. Our effort at co-operating with other countries is mainly aimed at cracking down on illegal and unscrupulous agents here,” says Jose Alvarez, regional director of South Asia of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Work permits for skilled immigrants require a lot of documentation and frauds through these routes are difficult. “Student visas and family immigrations are commonly misused categories. Sham marriages and adoptions are also common misuses. Some countries have found that education and corporate documents provided to obtain employment visas too are sometimes fake,” says Mumbai-based immigration lawyer Poorvi Chothani.

Gullible Victims

While the foreign missions in India are concerned over irregular immigration, a larger solution lies in steps taken by the Indian government to curb illegal immigration at the source. Under the Emigration Act, there are provisions of a Protector General of Emigrants (PGE) at the centre and Protector of Emigrants (POE) at the state level to grant emigration clearances and help intending emigrants.

“They are bound to ensure that no person functions as a recruiting agent without a registration certificate and that no employer conducts recruitments for foreign employment without a valid permit issued by the POE. The POE must protect and aid all intending emigrants with advice and support,” says Chandigarh-based immigration lawyer Ranjit Malhotra.

However, the Act is flouted with impunity and there’s no redressal or remedy, he adds. Agents and sub-agents lure their victims with advertisements in newspapers, gaudy display signboards and promises of a good life in foreign countries. “There is no regulation, rule, policy or law to check unethical and misleading advertisements. The innocent victims are only too gullible,” Malhotra concludes.

3 men shot at East Jacksonville barbershop

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

Police K-9 units and dozens of officers scoured the area around the East Jacksonville barbershop where a dispute Monday night resulted in three men shot.

An officer nearby heard gunfire break out about 9:30 p.m., and minutes later 911 calls began coming in describing wounded victims in the 800 block of A. Philip Randolph Boulevard.

The shooting happened during an argument at the establishment between five men, according to Lt. George W. Grant of the Sheriff’s Office. The victims were between 20 to 30 years old.

One victim was shot in the arm, one in the leg and the other the torso, Grant said. None was life-threatening.

Police did not provide a description of the perpetrators other than to say there were possibly two. However, they expect to make more progress Tuesday.

“I rode this beat for years and no one’s going to talk to us tonight,” said Sgt. Robert John of the aggravated battery unit.

There were still dozens of people milling around the area as police investigated.

“No one likes to be the one seen standing on the corner talking to the police,” he said. “But someone will talk to us tomorrow.”

Dozen illegal immigrants arrested in Lincolnshire

Friday, May 18th, 2012

UK Border Agency said it stopped two vehicles on the A52 at Somerby Hill near Grantham at 06:00 BST.

Officers said the men, 11 Indian nationals and the other a Pakistani, were among 24 men and were probably set to work on a farm in the county.

The 12 men have been taken to immigration detention centres pending their removal from the UK.

Rachel Challis, from the UK Border Agency’s Lincolnshire local immigration team, said: “Businesses that take on illegal workers should also be warned that they face heavy fines and possible prosecution.

“Any foreign national who is in the UK illegally should be in no doubt that they will be found, arrested and removed from the country.”
